The Volta Regional Minister is urging religious leaders to educate followers on misinformation churned out by secessionist groups operating within the Volta Region.
According to Dr. Archibald Letsa, the groups are trying their best to twist facts to persuade young people to join their camp.
Speaking to JoyNews, he explained that it is essential for leaders of the community including religious leaders to disseminate accurate information while engaging the youth.
“Volta Region has been part of Ghana since independence and our laws don’t allow anybody to think about what these people are imagining,” he said at a stakeholder engagement with leaders of the E.P. Church, Ghana and the Roman Catholic Church.
His comments come after some people in the Volta Region on September 25 launched a series of attacks on government properties calling for the independence of the region.
Nene Kwaku Agblorm II, a traditional ruler and 26 others who are suspected to be secessionists have now been charged with treason.
The suspects are said to have on September 25, this year in the Volta Region, prepared to carry out an unlawful means and enterprise to usurp the executive powers of the Republic.
In an amended charge sheet, they are also facing charges of conspiracy, participating in the campaign of a prohibited organisation namely Western Togoland, conspiracy to causing unlawful damage, causing unlawful damage, stealing, and rioting with weapons.
The Volta Regional Minister stated that while some perpetrators are being dealt with, an engagement with the people will help ensure the youth, especially, does not fall for secessionists promises of a better life or fake jobs.
Educating people on facts will also aid in alleviating their fears of any impending conflict or doom, Dr Lesta added.
He also urged the media to help the leaders in society push accurate information across the region.
