Executives of the National Democratic Congress in Western North Region have questioned the government on why cocoa fertilizers are being sold to farmers when it was free under the Mahama administration.
Addressing the press on Tuesday, the Region’s Communication Officer for the NDC, Sam Jerome described the Akufo-Addo-led administration's decision to sell fertilizer to peasant farmers as “heartless”.
He further noted that the act to sell the fertilizers has caused financial loss to the State as the procured fertilizers have all expired.
Government over years has initiated several stimulus packages in order to develop the cocoa sector.
Mr Jerome cited initiatives successive governments implemented before the governing New Patriotic Party took over the reins of office in 2016.
According to him, former President Jerry John Rawlings provided free cocoa seedlings to farmers while the Mahama government introduced free fertilizer policy until it was abolished.
This, he argued, has caused a financial burden on farmers because they cannot afford them, adding that: “This is very sad and can be best described as wicked.”
He further called on the government to bring the free fertilizer policy back to ensure high production of cocoa in the region.
