Three supporters of an independent parliamentary candidate in the Sefwi Wiawso constituency have been remanded by the Sefwi Wiawso Magistrate Court for engaging in public violence.
Confirming the information to Adom News, the Western North Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Nana Kwaku Duah said the culprits attacked the supporters of the Member of Parliament of the area, Dr Kwaku Afriyie.
According to him, the independent candidate, Martin Bonye used to be a financier of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency until he broke away to announce his independent candidature.
This, he said, did not sit well with the supporters and sympathizers of the incumbent MP, therefore, after the independent candidate had filed his nomination form on Tuesday, October 6, some supporters of the NPP parliamentary candidate disrupted the party.
However, the aggrieved supporters of Mr Bonye, instead of reporting the issue, took the law into their own hands and retaliated profusely.
The police were later informed, and subsequently, three persons; Kwame Nkrumah, Enoch Baafi and John Apentekame were arrested and have been remanded.
He said they will reappear before court on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.
The Chief Inspector further revealed that although the independent candidate and his brother were not found during the arrest, the court has ordered for them to be presented in the second appearance.
He also advised, “This is a warning to all political activists. The police will deal with anyone who goes against the laws without fear and panic in the region."
