MP for the North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will ensure an independent and strengthened Auditor-General's department, free from external influence and corruption.
“I think we are clear in article 109 of our manifesto, were we state in specific terms that we will strengthen the Auditor-General’s Office by safeguarding its independence.
"We are of the view that the Auditor-General must be given free room to operate and that there should be no interference such as the one we have seen," he stressed.
Speaking on JoyNews' NewsFile, Mr. Ablakwa described attacks on the Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo as uncalled for.
"As soon as he started to go after a matter, we saw how elements in the NPP government came after him.
"The court cases, proceed on leave, the lock to his office door has been changed, this is the first time in the history of Ghana’s public service we are hearing that when you are asked to proceed on leave, your locks change,” he said.
His statement follows the recently released report by the World Bank titled “Enhancing Government Effectiveness and Transparency: The Fight Against Corruption."
This was after the Office of Auditor-General, Daniel Yaw Domelevo was used as a representation to the rest of the world on how to fight corruption.
The report had indicated that billions are lost to corruption which needs to be directed to development.
It had also added that the situation was worrying "and could undermine the credibility of the government and even increase inequality and poverty and even exaggerate the differences between the rich and the poor."
But Mr. Ablakwa maintains his party can do more to curb the corruption menace unlike the governing NPP.
