The Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools, CHASS says many public schools are yet to be hooked onto the free internet that government says it has provided.
National President, Yacoub Abubakar says to the best of his knowledge, only some schools in the Ashanti region have benefited from the Free WiFi policy.
“I am aware that some Senior High Schools have been connected to it but we still have many that have not been connected to it yet. For example, my own school has not been hooked on yet,” he said in an interview with JoyNews.
His response comes after Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia said on Asempa FM that 80% of Senior High Schools across the country have received free Wifi connections sponsored by the government.
This, he explained, is intended to broaden the scope of education, Information, Communication and Technology (ICT), research and knowledge acquisition in these institutions.
He said that the system is being tested before it is approved to be fit for use.
Mr Abubakar indicated that although internet cables have been installed on his school campus along with others some others, they are, however, yet to receive any internet connection.
“They are left with bringing in the firm to fix them and hook us onto it,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Builsa South and a member of the Education Committee Dr Clement Apaak has challenged the Vice President to provide the names of all the schools said to have been connected to government’s free Wifi programme.
Taking to his Facebook post, Dr Apaak said since Ghana has a total number of 721 Senior High Schools, 80% of the number will mean 577 SHSs have WiFi as alleged by the Vice President.
“Is it wrong to ask Vice President Bawumia to furnish the good people of Ghana with the names and locations of the 577 out of the total of 721 Senior High Schools in Ghana connected to WiFi?
Dr Apaak stated that Ghanaians have every right to verify the Vice President’s claims.
