The Volta Region House of Chiefs has called for an independent investigation into the recent attacks by some suspected members of a secessionist group.
This, in their view, should be followed with apprehension and prosecution of the criminals in order to ensure a free and fair election in December.
The appeal by the Chiefs comes 3 days after some armed men ransacked two police stations in targeted towns in the North Tongu constituency and attacked the officers on duty.
They are reported to have made away with arms from the Police armoury and blocked major roads with burning car tyres while chanting war songs.
“The Volta Region House of Chiefs, therefore, calls on the government to cause an independent and transparent investigation into the events of Friday, 25th September, 2020 and bring the perpetrators to book, in order to ensure a peaceful environment for the free and fair conduct of the forthcoming general elections, particularly in the Volta Region.”
“The Volta Region House of Chiefs finally wishes to appeal to the people of the Region to remain calm and help maintain the peace that the region has enjoyed over the years,” they said in a statement.
Their appeal is in line with a similar call by the Director of Communications for the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi who also called for an independent investigation into the attacks.
Sammy Gyamfi said government is complicit considering its failure to nip their activities in the bud as the police claim to have had intelligence prior to the incident.
Meanwhile, the National House of Chiefs has also condemned the attack and disassociated themselves from the separatist group.
