Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Sammy Gyamfi has blamed government for the recent violence by a separatist group in parts of the Volta region.
He described it as a failure on Akufo-Addo's part to safeguard the security of the area because the group's intentions are well-known as they did not start recently.
Sammy Gyamfi said the NDC is worried and disturbed by the development adding that the perpetrators of the attack must be treated as criminals.
“As a party, we condemn in no uncertain terms this armed violent invasion of parts of the Volta region.
"We think that it is a clear monumental failure on the part of President Akufo-Addo, his government and our security agencies to protect the people of the Volta region particularly where is invasion happened.
According to him, the fact when at the government was voted for, the responsibility of protecting the nation and its territorial integrity was handed to them, particularly the Regional Minister and the regional Security Council.
Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, he stated that the authorities have failed the nation by allowing the “brazing display of bravado”.
“The reason why we are so disappointed in the Akufo-Addo government relative to this incident is because this did not start today. We’ve seen the signs and the members of these secessionist groups are known, the over 70 years old leader of Western Togoland lives in the Volta Region and they are known by the state security agencies,” he told host Samson Ayenini.
Mr Gyamfi noted that the country is known to be a peaceful one hence the action of the group must not be tolerated.
The political communicator was speaking after some men attacked the Aveyime and Mepe Police Stations in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region.
They are said to be members of a group who are advocating for the independence of parts of the Volta Region they call Western Togoland.
