Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Mahama has demanded that the Electoral Commission (EC) publishes names of persons with defective voters ID cards.
He said this will ensure a credible register and flawless election result come the December 7, election.
Addressing the press in Accra Thursday, he said, "I reiterate the demand of the General Secretary for the EC to publish the full names and particulars of persons with defective voters ID cards".
Mr Mahama stressed that the deletion, duplication, and missing data of persons, including his running mate, Prof. Naana Jane Mensah is a threat to the country's democracy.
"The sheer volume of anomalies in this year's voters' exhibition exercise is unusual and unprecedented and gives us genuine cause for concern about the credibility of the exercise and the integrity of the electoral process," he said.
The NDC has expressed concern with regards to the EC not disclosing the problem it is facing, but wait until a time where elections are around the corner to start doing things anyhow.
The former President said he awaits the response of the Electoral Commission to the questions he sent to its office.
The pending questions are:
- When did it come to the attention of the EC that some of the voters' ID cards issued to registrants during the recent voters register exercise had duplicate ID numbers and therefore were defective?
2. Why did the EC not inform the political parties who are the major stakeholder in our electoral process in the spirit of fairness and transparency and in line with our established electoral practice?
According to him, the acceptable practice was to inform political parties to deploy agents to monitor any such process in accordance with the electoral laws and conventions.
