Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has described the country's first Prime Minister and President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah as an iconic figure worth celebrating.
As part of the celebration to mark the birthday of Ghana’s Independence leader, the former President lauded Kwame Nkrumah's role in the independence struggle and liberation of many African countries.
“On this day, I want to salute for his tireless and monumental contribution not only to our nation’s history but to Africa’s history,” Mr Mahama said as the country celebrates the 111th birthday of Kwame Nkrumah, Monday.
Over the years, September 21 has been set aside as a public holiday to commemorate the birthday of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah who was born in 1909.
It is marked with lectures and events to remember his achievements and legacy.
Mr Mahama who is on a campaign tour of the Bono Region further stated that Dr Nkrumah’s zeal and massive impact on Ghana’s history inspired numerous countries.
“Dr Nkrumah was an inspiration to many countries around the world,” he said.
