Former President John Dramani Mahama says his government will engage in an agro-processing initiative to convert food crops to marketable products.
According to him, predominant agricultural activities in various parts of the country have been looked at and mapped for the initiative.
John Mahama, who was speaking on Woezor TV said the initiative would help the Agric sector and the Ghanaian economy by adding value to crop products which will subsequently generate more foreign exchange.
"We are going to put in place processing capacities to be able to buy all cashew from the farmers.
"And then be able to process it both for internal consumption and export."
He explained that, farmers in the Bono East Region would be involved in the agro-processing initiative because they produce cashew and other exportable commodities like pepper, maize, beans and groundnut in large quantity.
"Krobo have pepper and pepper is an exportable item.
"If we put in a processing plant to process their pepper, we can sell some to the Ghanaian market and export some to generate foreign exchange."
