Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament, James Klutse Avedzi has condemned an assault on the legislature for Odododiodio Constituency, Nii Lante Vanderpuye.
According to the Ketu North MP, such behaviour should not be entertained by the general public or in politics.
Nii Lante Vanderpuye, who is also a former Sports Minister was physically assaulted by 12 alleged operative of the National Security in front of the James Town Police station on Monday night.
The recent attack has resurrected earlier debates for adequate security for MP outside the Chamber.
Last year, the leadership of Parliament made a strong case for the state to take steps to provide security for Members of Parliament (MPs) to protect them against attacks by unguarded members of society.
Arguing the case, the Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye said per the nature of the work of MPs in terms of their investigative and inquisitorial functions, they incurred the anger of some members of society who would want to harm the MPs.
But with less than 100 days to the December 7, elections, and the numerous violence that erupted the compilation of a new voters’ register for the polls, tensions have been high as many fear the December 7, polls will not be peaceful.
But speaking to a section of the press in Parliament, James Avedzi described the action by the perpetrators as wicked and unacceptable.
According to him, although the Minority is yet to take action against the attack, police administration can fast-track its investigations to ensure that the perpetrators of the crime are brought to book.
“Why should a Member of Parliament be assaulted. What is his crime? If he is assaulted in his constituency and people get to know the perpertrators and retaliate then there is going to be fight here and there.
"It is not proper to assault a Member of Parliament and in fact, it is not proper to assault anybody because Ghana is a peaceful place.
"So we are urging the police to quickly arrest the people and find out why they should assault the MP.
"Currently, we are waiting for the full briefing from the MP, then we will take the appropriate action. Once that is done we will know which action to take and one of them will be to write to the Speaker about security," he said
Adding his voice, the Kumbungu Constituency MP, Ras Mubarak also condemned the incident.
Citing the attack on the MP for Ningo Prampram, Sam George as an example, the MP expressed disappointment in the police for the unseriousness attached to crimes perpetrated against members of the opposition NDC and the delay in arresting culprits.
