The Volta River Authority (VRA) Trust fund on Monday, August 31 rolled out a programme to disinfect and fumigate all facilities in the 52 resettlement communities across the country.
This exercise forms part of measures to prevent the spread of Coronavirus in the country and is in line with the easing of restrictions imposed by government.
President Akufo-Addo during his 16th address to the nation Sunday August 30 noted:
"The decision has been taken by the Ghana Education Service after consultation with the relevant stakeholders, for SHS 2 and JHS 2 students to return to school from 5th October to 14th December 2020 to complete their academic year. Prior to reopening, all Junior and Senior High Schools will be fumigated and disinfected".
The programme by the VRA Trust Fund is to augment government’s effort in the fight against the pandemic and also to show leadership and responsibility in the communities of its operation.
Day one saw the team fumigate and disinfect five communities in two regions, i.e Eastern and Oti Regions.
In the Eastern region, the team first made a stop at Dedeso in the Fanteakwa North district, where a kindergarten block, 6 unit primary (3No RC DA), 3 unit JHS, 6 unit nurses quarters, police station and a clinic were disinfected and fumigated.
The team led by Modapest then moved to Mpaem. There a kindergarten, 6 unit primary, 3 unit JHS, 6 nurses quarters and a clinic were worked on.
At Dominase, which was the next community, the facilities disinfected and fumigated include kindergarten, 6 unit primary, 3 unit JHS and a community centre.
The team then rounded up its work in the Fanteakwa North district at Onuku. The agents thoroughly worked on the only kindergarten block there, a 6 unit primary, 3 unit JHS and a 6 unit teachers’ quarters.
Still, in the Eastern region, some facilities at New Oworobong in the Kwahu South District, Forifori in Kwahu Afram Plains South and Ntonaboma in the Kwahu Afram Plains North are expected to benefit from the programme.
In the Oti region,
The Asukawkaw Krachi East district was the target for day one. A 3 kindergarten, 6 unit primary, and a 3 unit (4No RC/DA) were disinfected.
There was also the disinfection of 2 4-unit nurses’ quarters, 6-units nurses’ quarters and a clinic in the same area. Facilities in four other towns; Pai Katanga, Asonkwanta, Tokroano and Dambai are expected to be disinfected and fumigated in the coming days.
In an interview with Director of Modapest, Akwasi Kwarteng, he assured the chemicals being used for the exercise has been certified by the environmental protection agency, adding the chemicals are human friendly.
Meanwhile, some of the managers of the various facilities in the communities lauded the VRA Trust fund for such a move.
The disinfection and fumigation of these facilities are being funded by the Volta River Authority and estimated to be at a cost of GH¢2million.
The VRA Trust fund was set up in 1996 to allow the VRA embark on projects to improve the livelihoods of the 52 communities that had to be resettled as a result of the construction of the Akosombo dam.
