A Senior Political Science Professor at the University of Ghana has condemned political parties for their late presentation of political manifestoes.
Prof. Ransford Gyampo explained that this practice which is fast becoming a norm is not healthy for a poor and underdeveloped country such as Ghana.
He noted that this leaves electorates with inadequate time to reflect on the various promises made by the parties to determine their feasibility.
“The delays in the release of party manifestoes coupled with the lack of credible platforms for dialogue and healthy contest of ideas through debate will always result in the discussion of irrational issues that will then form the basis of voting,” he said.
This follows the launch of the manifesto of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Saturday, August 22 at Cape Coast.
He noted on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Monday, that the delay in releasing manifestoes started in 2016 and has become the trend.
Prof. Gyampo stated that the outbreak of Covid-19 cannot be used as an excuse for the delay because the political parties know what they intend to do if voted into power.
“It is unacceptable and we as a people must demand change,” Ransford told host of Joy SMS, Winston Amoah.
He stated that individuals must be responsible for determining if a political party has fulfilled their promises or not.
Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other political parties are yet to outdoor their manifesto for the 2020 election year.
