President Nana Akufo-Addo has taken a jibe at the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama over his comments to review the Free Senior High School policy.
At the launch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2020 manifesto launch Saturday, he said his predecessor has no plan other than cancelling the programme.
According to him, the opposition party led by the former President will only deprive the poor people of the society access to quality education.
“For eight years, he [Mr Mahama] and his party were loud in their assertions that they did not believe in free SHS and free TVET. They didn’t like the idea, they rubbished it at every opportunity and proclaimed that it will destroy Ghana’s economy.
"And when they were in office they had a hard time trying to implement their water down version of ‘Progressively Free Education’. Then [all of a sudden] we hear him and his party say it [free SHS and TVET has come to stay," he stated.
“Excellency please try another one, your credibility on this one is zero. Free SHS and free TVET cannot be trusted into your hands," he emphasised.
In October 2019, former President John Mahama reiterated that he will review the Akufo-Addo-led administration’s flagship Free-SHS Policy within his first 90-days in office if elected in the 2020 general elections.
According to him, the current government did not listen to him on countless occasions as he said that a consultative and stakeholders meeting needed to be arranged to fashion out how best and efficiently to implement the free senior high school.
But, President Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians not to heed to Mr Mahama’s ‘sweet-talks’.
For the President, Mr Mahama cannot efficiently manage the implementation of the free SHS like his government.
He also noted that the Mahama-led NDC will derail all the flagship programmes including the Planting for Food and Jobs should he come to power.
“Why should anyone imagine an NDC administration under the former president [Mr Mahama] will treat businesses any differently from what they [NDC] did the last time around?” President Akufo-Addo quizzed.
