Newly appointed Asante Kotoko Chief Executive Nana Yaw Amponsah has dismissed claims he applied for the Porcupine Warriors job to improve his chances of becoming Ghana Football Association (GFA) president.
Amponsah contested the GFA presidential elections in October last year. Of the six candidates, Amponsah placed third behind winner, Kurt Okraku and George Afriyie, who was second.
His vote tally on the day was very encouraging as he beat former GFA Vice President, Fred Pappoe. Many believe he would have won if he was popular among the football fraternity.
12 months later and Nana Yaw has earned himself a big platform in Ghana football after being named CEO of the Ghanaian giants. He has been handed a three-year mandate until 2023.
At his unveiling on Friday in Kumasi, Amponsah was asked if he applied for the job to gain popularity ahead of the next GFA elections in 2023.
He denied those claims, saying the Kotoko position is bigger than occupying the job at the local football governing body.
“I say Asante Kotoko; no disrespect to the Ghana Football Association presidential position that I aspired to occupy, Kotoko for me is the biggest of the two positions," he said.
"I have dealt with many federations, I have dealt with many clubs. If I ask who the President of the English FA is, you may not be able to tell me, but you will able to tell me who the Executive Chairman of Manchester United is.
So, I do not take this responsibility lightly at all," he added.
