The Electoral Commission (EC) has set up an Adjudication Review Committee to determine cases of alleged multiple registrations in the ongoing compilation of the new voters' register.
The establishment of the committee forms part of the commission’s effort to ensure a credible register for the December polls.
“The time is right to set into motion, mechanisms to ensure that the voters’ register is credible and reflects eligible Ghanaians only,” said EC Chairperson Jean Mensa on Wednesday.
The committee is made up of representatives from the civil society organisations, political parties (NPP, NDC, CPP and LPG) and some officials of the EC.
It is geared towards augmenting the existing challenge system at the district levels where persons alleged to be non-Ghanaians can provide more evidence detailing their nationality.
Also, there is a de-duplication technology employed by the EC to promote integrity of the records churned out during the compilation of a new electoral role.
“When the system is unable to confidently determine whether an applicant’s record is a duplicate or not, the process of manual adjudication is then initiated. During the adjudication, a process will analyse each matching record and determine whether it is a duplicate or not,” said the EC.
Jean Mensa explained that the members of the committee have been trained and provided with police to enable them rule on the different cases presented to them.
“These cases range from persons who have different facial features but have some of their biometric features matching to other persons. It also covers persons who have facial features and fingerprints matching.
Speaking at the event to unveil members of the committee in Accra, the EC Chairperson charged them to “work in co-operation and harmony” to ensure the effectiveness in executing its mandate.
The EC has exceeded its target of 15 million and has projected to enroll another 1.5 million persons by the end of the ongoing voters' registration exercise.
