The Minority in Parliament is challenging the capacity of government to provide free water to Ghanaians for the next three months.
Ranking member on Parliament's Works and Housing Committee Emmanuel Bedzrah said government is simply making the promise out of political expediency with the 2020 elections looming.
Speaking to JoyNews’ parliamentary correspondent, Joseph Opoku-Gakpo, he said the initial three months of free water announced by President Akufo-Addo was not enjoyed by all Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) customers.
He said customers of the water supplier came to him with bills despite the president’s announcement in April.
“As the president continues with his promising galore, we are waiting to see if it would materialise,” the Ho West MP said.
His comments come after Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta delivered the government’s mid-year budget statement on Thursday.
According to him, government will absorb the cost of water for all Ghanaians for the next three months.
He added that all lifeline consumers of power will also enjoy free electricity for the next six months.
The announcement has since received mixed reactions from the public with some critics raising concerns of cost-effectiveness of the policy.
But speaking on the issue, NPP MP on the Works and Housing Committee Samed Gunu said the move will help poor communities survive in these difficult times.
He said the NDC is simply crying foul because they are in opposition.
