The Eastern Regional Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organization (NaDMO) is planting 500,000 trees cross the Eastern Region.
The trees would be planted in public and private schools, hospitals, public buildings, churches, some homes, at the entrances of some district capitals and other strategic locations.
The initiative dubbed "Eastern NaDMO Afforestation Development Project" is aimed at growing trees as windbreaks as well as for shade at major public places.
At a ceremony to launch the project at the All Nations University College, the Eastern Regional Director of NaDMO, Kwame Appiah Kodua hinted the project would not only help green the region but also contribute to the reduction of global warming.
According to Mr Kodua, NaDMO as part of its disaster management objective, is equally committed to preventive measures.
He said the Organization spends a lot of money roofing ripped off structures and finding shelter for the displaced in the aftermath of a windstorm or heavy downpour.
The Afforestation Development Project would primarily serve as a mitigating factor against the attendant negative effect of these natural occurrences.
About four species of trees namely Mahogany, Acacia, Blighia and Teak would be planted within 12 months.
Mr. Appiah Kodua hinted that the Organization would ensure that these trees are nurtured to fulfill their purpose, and are looking forward to a 95 percent success rate.
The first institution to benefit from the project is the All Nations University College where 1,000 trees are currently being planted.
The Registrar of the school Rev. Adriana Lon expressed her joy in leading the greening agenda and would ensure that the necessary care is given to the trees.
