A senior political scientist at the University of Ghana says until women begin to form a supportive constituency for themselves, it will be difficult to get them into high political and power-wielding positions.
Prof Ransford Gyampo's comment comes after the NDC announced Prof Naana Opoku-Agyemang as John Mahama's running mate in the upcoming 2020 General Elections being held on December 7, 2020.
He explained that despite several efforts to empower women to take their rightful place in decision making, "when you have a woman wanting to occupy such high positions of power, women do not support that."
On the other hand, some have said that the academic will be able to garner interests of women in the country to gain access in becoming the country's first female Vice President, breaking through that barrier, thus setting an example for other female aspirants.
However, Prof. Gyampo says she can help the ticket of John Mahama if she has the support and backing of fellow women.
He said that since the 1992 Constitution was established, political divisions have played a huge role in who supports who which has greatly affected how women support each other when it comes to political parties.
"Because of political party division, some women would say that 'well she's a great woman but because she's not coming from our own party, we'll not support her,"
Prof Gyampo stressed that until women decide to come together, despite party politics, the challenge to get women to the top remains unattainable.
