President Nana Akufo-Addo has promised citizens that, the upcoming voters' registration exercise will be done devoid of any violence or intimidation.
Addressing the nation on Monday, ahead of the conduct of the exercise on Tuesday, June 30, he indicated that the voters’ register is the most crucial bedrock of the country’s democracy.
For this matter, he said no eligible registrant or electorate should be prevented from performing their civic duties in peace and freedom.
The president further revealed that adequate preparation has been taken by the security agencies to ensure that there is sanity in the process.
“Improper behaviour of any citizen, no matter their political colour, will not be tolerated. And I am encouraged by the recent reassurance by the Inspector General of Police that police have been instructed to be even-handed in their response to issues.
“That is the only way the rule of law can be upheld,” he stressed.
Adding that, “They [security agencies] have assured me of the determination to carry out their duties without fear or favour.”
The Supreme Court in a unanimous decision granted the Electoral Commission the power to compile a new voters’ register.
The new roll, according to the EC, will be a credible and comprehensive one to replace the old register which they argue to be filled with unqualified electorates.
Subsequently, the registration exercise is to commence on Tuesday, June 30, to Thursday, August 6, 2020.
