The General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said on hindsight the party would have loved to protect some defeated MPs in the Parliamentary primaries.
John Boadu told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Monday that Mark Assibey-Yeboah and Ben Abdallah Banda are two MPs the NPP would have loved to protect from contesting.
Saturday's Parliamentary primaries saw Dr Assibey-Yeboah who is the Chairman of the Finance Committee of Parliament lose his re-election bid in New Juaben South.
Ben Abdallah Banda, the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee and the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee was also defeated in the Offinso Constituency.
Some 40 MPs in total lost their positions on the party’s ticket.
The General Secretary said some defeated aspirants' experience is needed for the country especially when it comes to lawmaking.
However, Mr. Boadu said the people should have a choice of who to represent them and the party cannot protect all its MPs from primaries lest it creates much acrimony in the ranks.
He said competition also gives legitimacy to the winning candidate and resolves any infighting which lack of competition brings.
