National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS) is demanding that the international community speaks up against the demolition of a property on its High Commissioner's residence in Ghana.
A team of armed men used a bulldozer to bring down a building on the premises of the Nigerian High Commissioner in Accra June 19.
According to the head of security at the High Commission Emmanuel Kabutey, the leader of the demolition team told them they had the backing of National Security and that “if any of us try, he will clear us off.”
Paramount Chief of the Osu Traditional Area Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI says the Nigerian High Commission has trespassed on a plot of land belonging to the Osu Stool.
He stressed in a press release issued on Sunday that the said parcel of land and the entire Osu Mantse layout is not state land but is a part of its land.
Nii Kinka Dowuona VI stated that “it is only the Stool that has the mandate to grant lease be it expired or otherwise.”
The relations between Ghana and Nigeria have been over the past months been bedeviled by tensions especially in the area of retail trade.
But this latest development is the straw the broke the camel's back for NANTS as it calls out the international community for what it believes is a seeming silence.
But in a statement signed by the Secretariat's President, Ken Ukaoha expressed dissatisfaction with what it describes as an indictment on both countries, "ECOWAS, the African Union and the Global community for not acting enough to address this negative trend."
It added that "It is sad that such unwarranted attack and xenophobia is brewing and the World is watching helplessly or perhaps enjoying the drama which may end tragically."
"We wish to state clearly that diplomacy is good, and Nigeria has commendably taken the option of diplomacy till date; yet, as a principle in
International law, diplomacy has an end. Nigeria should be reminded that reciprocity is also part of diplomacy," the association added.
