Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Dr Kwesi Jonah has described the phenomenon of many candidates going unopposed in the NPP primaries as a choiceless democracy.
According to him, about 40% of candidates are to be acclaimed and run on the party's ticket in the December 7 polls.
The political scientist revealed that most of the unopposed candidates are individuals who hold key positions in President Akufo-Addo's government.
"If you look at the background of these unopposed candidates, many of them are ministers or people who have been given high political appointments under this particular regime" he said.
Dr Kwesi Jonah questioned the bases for the NPP to make some persons run unopposed. He indicated that this process favours certain political classes.
"The process of becoming an unopposed candidate is not a random chance process. It is a politically selective process which benefits those who are either ministers or occupying high government appointment" he said.
He also bemoaned the low number of women who contested in the primaries.
A total of 374 aspirants contested in 168 constituencies. Of the number, 325 are men and 51 women. 67 of the aspirants were unopposed and would be acclaimed by delegates of the party in the various constituencies.
Kwesi Jonah indicated that there seems to be a problem with the vetting process which resulted in disgruntled supporters of some disqualified candidates reigning curses on the NPP leadership.
These happenings, he said, raises issues of transparency and the party must take a second look at the process in order to resolve lingering concerns before the general elections in December 2020.
