Real MC and Wutah Kobby

Two musicians, Wutah Kobby and Real MC, who are stranded in the UK because of the coronavirus, say they cannot afford to come back to Ghana via the government's evacuation exercise.

They said the expenses involved in the exercise is “outrageous” and they did not expect to pay that much money to return.

Their concerns come after Ghana's High Commission in London released a statement detailing the expenses for stranded Ghanaians who wished to leave the UK.

In the release, it was noted that the evacuees would be placed in hotels including Airport View Hotel, Alisa and Marriot hotel each with different prices per night.

UK to Ghana evacuation exercise

Speaking to Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz Hitz FM one of the artistes, Real MC, said he has no qualms footing the bill for his flight and living expenses while in quarantine.

However, he believes it is extravagant for the Commission to send them to 2-4 star hotels that cost ¢500 to ¢600 per night when they could have chosen other places which could cost less.

“We mean to return, but, the conditions attached to the return is making it very hard…quarantining is not a problem but how many stranded Ghanaians can pay ¢7000 to ¢8400 for the two weeks stay in the suggested hotels. This is extortion,” he added.

Real MC, who had gone to the UK for a media tour and vacation, has been in the country for almost four months.

He said because of the closure of borders, the UK government keep extending their stay to protect the travellers and citizens.

Real MC stated that he and some other Ghanaians are not leaving the UK because the money being requested is “huge”.

Also speaking to Andy Dosty on the show, Wutah Kobby, who had gone to the UK for a show three months ago, said he was not expecting to stay that long.

However, Wutah Kobby said with the evacuation fees he would have to cough up at least ¢11,000 before he comes to the country.

“When you prepare for two weeks and you’re staying for three months it’s quite different…I followed up but the conditions honestly it’s outrageous,” he stated.
