Five years since the June 3 fire and flood disaster, history seems not to have thought Ghanaians a lesson as another downpour this week left some five people dead in parts of the capital. The Ghana Meteorological Agency said the nation should expect more.
This weekend’s edition of the weekly wrap also highlights a rather grim milestone for the Ghana as the novel coronavirus case crossed the 10,000 mark. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has also expressed worry over the Electoral Commission’s adamancy to heed to concerns raised ahead of the compilation of the new voters’ register. But the Electoral Commission has justified the need to follow through with decision describing the current roll as bloated and unfit for purpose.
However, Parliament through the majority decision gave permission to the EC to use the Ghana Card and passport as the source documents for the registration.
But the Opposition NDC said this would lead to an avalanche of court cases against the Electoral Commission. Before that, the EC had set 20th June to begin the mass voters registration exercise.
By Thursday, the NDC had withdrawn its request asking the Supreme Court to stop the EC from compiling a new voter’s register. The party, however, asked the court to compel the EC to use the existing voters' ID as the source document for the new register.
