Ghana Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance is anticipating a rise in the number of late-stage non-communicable diseases at health posts across the country after Covid-19.
Chairperson, Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai observed that the seeming over-concentration on Covid-19 could lead to this projection at the expense of non-communicable diseases.
“We’re already worried about the complications we’re going to receive after covid-19 is over. Already, we see a lot of late stage diseases before covid-19. What are we going to see after covid-19? We might record more cases of people with advanced diseases that we cannot help,” she said.
Dr Wiafe Addai said this when she donated face masks and hand sanitisers to the Peace and Love Survivors Association.
People with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, stroke, among others have been found to be more vulnerable to the novel coronavirus.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) report shows many people who have died of the disease, had these underlying health conditions.
Dr Wiafe Addai, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Breast Care International urged patients to abide by treatment protocols.
“If you’re diabetic or suffering from cancer, continue to use your medication and visit the hospital so that you keep fit while we fight covid-19. Covid-19 did not come to stop non-communicable diseases,” she stressed.
The donation going to the over 800 members is supported by Ghandour Cosmetics.
President of the Peace and love Survivors Association, Vivian Gyasi-Sarfo believes the gesture comes as a relief for especially vulnerable members.
“We have some vulnerable members among us and they are the persons who need the items most,” she noted.
