The First Deputy Majority Whip in Parliament has criticised the Minority MPs and members of the Inter-Party Resistance Against the New Voters’ Register who stormed the Police Headquarters to solidarize with the People’s National Convention (PNC) Chair, Bernard Mornah.
Mathew Nyindam in an interview with Joy News’ Joseph Opoku Gakpo described the act as “foolish support”.
According to him, their action encourages Mr Mornah to continue to articulate utterances that threatens the peace of the country.
“That is foolish support , in fact it is a very stupid support because they are the people who encourage others to make some statements that they cannot justify.
“You cannot go and support somebody in such circumstance and if that is what you are doing as legislators, then you should know that you are giving a very wrong support. So anybody who was there should bow his head down in shame,” he stated.
Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service on Thursday, May 28, 2020, invited Mr. Mornah for questioning over some pronouncements he made against the Electoral Commission (EC) which they deem as a threat.
In the letter, sighted by JoyNews and signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, (DCOP) Barima Tweneboah Sasraku II, Mr Mornah had allegedly vowed to resist every attempt by the EC to compile a new voters’ register.
In his response, the outspoken politician said he was not perturbed by the development.
According to him, while the invitation will be honoured adding that he does not regret his utterance, therefore, he will not retract or apologise.
Honouring the invitation today, members of the Inter-Party Resistance against the New Voters Register including the NDC legislators thronged the CID office.
The MPs included Sam George, Kwame Agbodza, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, A. B. A. Fuseini, Inusah Fuseini, James Agalga, among others were at the CID headquarters too.
However, Mr Nyindam says the PNC Chairman’s comments were out of place and the police should be allowed to their job.
“He is party chairman which makes him a leader and a role model, whatever that comes out of his mouth must be reconciliatory. It must not be war.
“He need his life I will need mine and for that matter he needs to explain to the CID and the Police, why he made those comments. So I do not think it is an intimidation,” he explained.
Reacting to the comments of the Majority Chief Whip, MP for Ningo-Prampram accused the NPP parliamentarian of being a hypocrite.
Sam George who was speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story Tuesday noted that Mr Nyindam never commented on issues involving his party members but is critising his colleagues in the opposition.
“When people get arrogant and full on the leisure and excesses of the State, they begin to speak without thinking about where they are coming from.
“Our elders tell us that when you point with one finger, four fingers are pointing back at you. So Matthew Nyindam has forgotten that when Nana Addo was a candidate made the most brazing attack on our democracy when he said ‘All die be die’."
He further accused the Akufo-Addo government of abusing his power to intimidate the opposition.
“We are now in the Animal Farm Republic, where four legs are good and two legs bad. So if you are an NPP member you can make any statement and walk free [but the opposition can’t].”
