The National Democratic Congress's position on the compilation of a new voters' register is an assault on the country's democracy says Mr. Richard Ahiagbah
Mr. Ahiagbah who is the Executive Director of Danquah Institute argues that the processes leading to the compilation of the current voters' register was fraught with illegalities, insisting that there cannot be any reasonable justification to defend its use.
At a news conference in Accra, the Executive Director said in spite of a Supreme Court’s decision to rid the register of unqualified persons, the Charlotte Osei led commission blatantly disregarded the court's directives.
According to him, the EC failed to provide space for the qualification of a registrant, which made it difficult for the commission to clean the register in 2016, adding that the current register ought to have been replaced then.
He questioned why the opposition NDC insipite of all the evidence available would still kick against moves to sanitize the register.
He believes their stance is a threat to the country’s democracy.
Mr. Ahiagbah says the compilation of a new register would restore the sanctity of the country's Electoral process, making it free and fair.
He criticized the lack of clarity in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) communications on the voter registration and other election-related controversies.
The Executive Director then admonished the EC to open up for engagement and objectively assess recommendations put forth by leading civil society organizations and members of the anti-corruption coalition.
