Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has defended government's policy of conducting coronavirus tests on only "at risk" populations.
These include people who are known to have come into contact with those who have already tested positive for Covid-19.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Beyond the Lockdown programme with Emefa Apawu, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah hinted the cost of testing makes it impossible for government to carry out mass testing.
“The Ghana decision is to test what we call at risk populations," he said. "The science about testing is that you test negative today and could contract [the disease] as you’re exiting the door of the testing centre. So testing is not immunity. But at-risk populations are the ones we focus on. That’s why contact tracing is important," he emphasized.
“A test cost about 50 dollars so you test at-risk population and that’s what we’re doing currently,” added.
He says government, upon advice, will be putting in place health protocols alongside the easing of the restrictions to curtail the spread of Covid-19
Ghana has so far conducted over 200,000 covid-19 nationwide with just over 8,000 proving positive.
