General Secretary for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) John Boadu has said it is the NPP that should be complaining about the exclusion of old voters’ ID from the Electoral Commission’s intended registration exercise for the compilation of a new roll for the 2020 general elections.
The NPP General Secretary said the EC's decision is more of a challenge to the ruling party than the opposition because the number of voters who have not received their Ghana cards in the strongholds of the NPP outweighs that of the opposition.
“If you consider the number of people who have not yet received their National Identification Authority cards; Central Region, Ashanti Region, Eastern Region and Greater Accra [which are all strongholds of the NPP] alone constitutes about 68% of those who have not received their cards yet.
There have been agitations against the use of the Ghana card in place of the old voter ID as a requirement for the compilation of a new voter register.
The opposition NDC mounted fresh resistance to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to exclude the old voters’ ID from its intended compilation of a new roll for the 2020 general elections.
The NDC opposition alleged that the exercise is a grand scheme to rig the 2020 elections.
Mr. Boadu, however, has debunked such claims saying that the NPP is equally at risk of losing voters should the EC proceed with the exercise.
"All the other 12 regions constitute around just 32% so if you want to talk about connivance with NIA to disenfranchise people it is we the NPP, that should be complaining," he told JoyNews.
