National Chairman of the governing NPP, Freddy Blay is fighting off claims that the party is yet to select a flagbearer for the 2020 polls.
Mr. Blay argues that, President Akufo-Addo was the only candidate to have picked nomination forms for re-election and that makes him an automatic candidate for the 2020 polls even without acclamation.
‘Obviously, we have only Nana Addo Dankwa Akfuo-Addo as our candidate. The national constitution even says that, when you conduct a primaries of such nature and people don’t come up and there’s only one candidate that files his nomination; he becomes the obvious choice.’
Mr. Blay’s comment comes on the back of criticism by the General Secretary of the NDC Johnson Aseidu Nketia, that the NPP is yet to choose a flagbearer for the December polls.
Asiedu Nketia in his jab asked supporters of the NPP to stop fretting about when the NDC will name a running mate to partner former President Mahama in the upcoming general election when they did not have a flagbearer.
But Mr. Blay says the NDC will only be deceiving themselves if they think the NPP doesn’t have a flagbearer for the elections.
According to him, the National Executive Committee of the party would only have to convey a meeting to formalize it but that notwithstanding, President Akufo-Addo remains the party’s flagbearer.
‘If the NDC wants to comfort itself by saying that we do not have a candidate or a flagbearer, it is their own beef. NEC will only convey a meeting to formalize it. It will be a formality for us to go through’
Chairman Blay also observed the party has concluded on the appeals process and the steering committee is yet to consider the report from the appeals committee.
He however appealed to Ghanaians to re-elect President Akufo-Addo based on his sterling performance over the last 3 years.
