Twenty-five unclaimed bodies of the recent accident at Kintampo have been buried in mass graves, as the authorities were unable identify the remains and hand them over to their respective families.
With the bodies burnt beyond recognition in the accident in which the vehicles involved caught fire, the decision was made bury the charred remains in mass graves.
The March 2020 incident left 31 passengers dead. Six were identified and buried by their families. Seven others who survived the accident were also treated and discharged accordingly less than 4- days after the accident.
On Saturday, charred bodies of the remaining 25 people who were burnt beyond recognition have been buried. Islamic prayer known as Ṣalāt al-Janāzah was performed for the deceased Muslims.
Though it is not permitted to observe that prayer at the graveyard, the Imam and few others who congregated had no option.
Christian and traditional prayers were also said for the deceased. This was necessary because of authorities' inability to identify the bodies and perform the necessary prayer according to their beliefs.
Records of the bodies are said to have been kept intact and families testified their loved ones were on board the vehicles that involved in the accident.
Divisional MTTD for Kintampo, DSP Frank Brobbey advises drivers to always take a rest in every long journey they embark on to ensure the safety of passengers.
DSP Brobbey further emphasised the need for drivers to respect LI. 21 (88) which throws light on compulsory rest. He said a post-mortem was conducted on the bodies before a definitive decision was reached to lay them to rest.
Some of the relatives who were at the burial ceremony bade farewell to the deceased ones.
One of them, James Musah who has since not been able to identify the charred body of his wife was at the short ceremony too to fare her well.
Monica Musah was travelling from Bawku to Kumasi when the incident occurred. She left behind seven (7) children with the husband.
Kintampo North Municipal Assembly in collaboration with security services supervised the burial ceremony. Municipal Chief Executive, Michael Sarkodie Baffoe, also urged road users to be cautious not to repeat similar incidents along the road.
He explained that there is an absolute dialogue into the frequent vehicular accident on the stretch to find a lasting solution to it.
"I don't want to go into spiritual dimensions. But if there is anything like that why not?" he asked, maintains that it is not his concern for now.
Mr Baffoe said religious bodies within the municipality are praying fervently to establish the cause of the accident.
But there are plans by the National Road Safety Authority to ensure the safety of vehicles and drivers on the roads. Officer in charge, Kwasi Agyenim Boateng revealed that his outfit would be stationing men at lorry terminals to ensure some regulations are obeyed.
