Ace football commentator Peter Drury has told Joy Sports that the proposed early June return for the English top-flight, Premier League, is 'looking less and less likely'.
The Premier League has been suspended since March due to the coronavirus pandemic, with 92 fixtures remaining.
The league had previously identified June 12 for matches to possibly start again, with the clubs resuming training in small groups on Tuesday, May 19.
As part of plans for the restart, authorities are conducting mass testing and so far, six persons across three Premier League clubs have tested positive.
"It's looking less and less likely. Certainly, any optimistic notion of an early June resumption seems to be disappearing fairly fast," Mr Drury said on the sports edition of PM Express show on Joy News, Tuesday.
If anything, maybe towards the latter end of June is still more realistic. I guess six (tested positive) out of 748 was probably a statistical likelihood in itself, I wouldn't have thought that it's a huge setback."
I think there is an understanding as it has already been said that within the great industry of football, there will be those who A, are reluctant to return and B, who as a matter of fact are going to find themselves face to face with the core problem itself. If English football is going to resume, is probably going to resume in that context."
The German Bundesliga became the first major football league to resume as games were played last weekend. In Spain and Italy, players have started training but the start date for the respective leagues remain uncertain.
For France, the league has been cancelled with PSG declared champions.
