Students in Brada Tonu in the Volta region have been relieved of the stress of walking long distances to and from school after the completion of a basic school facility.
Led by the District Chief Executive, Edmond Kudjoh Attah, the North Dayi District Assembly has constructed some classroom blocks for the community.
Prior to this development, the school children had no option than to travel over 12km to and from school.
The town which lies between a huge rocky mountain and a lake is plagued with the lack of social amenities.
Children and women, especially pregnant women, are the most affected as they climb daily for about 12 kilometres to access education and health care respectively.
They normally have to climb a rocky, sloppy and slippery mountain.
The old structure which was just a shade built in 1984 is no longer safe for use especially when it rains, a situation which was very disturbing to the residents
Speaking to JoyNews, some inhabitants were happy that their children can now study in a good environment without any challenges.
However, they have appealed that more development needs to brought to the community
Edmond Kudjoh Attah who is the DCE for the North Dayi District said plans are far advanced to use the uncompleted building near the new school block for JHS.
“I made a promise to them in 2016 as a constituency chairman then, that if the NPP wins, they will construct a classroom facility. To live up to my words, that is what I have done here," he said.
He explained that the edifice consisted staff common rooms, head teacher’s office among others.
The DCE revealed there are also plans to convert an old block to teacher’s quarters so they can stay in the community instead of walking through the mountains every day to school.
This is in line with the wishes of some residents who have appealed that a Junior High School is also built to ensure their children continue their basic education in the community.
