Former Communication Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has criticised the government’s communication strategy in the fight against coronavirus in Ghana, describing it as excessively “Anglo-centric.”
The Minister under former President John Mahama’s Presidency said because communication was key in the fight against the raging pandemic, important agencies that will ensure that messages reach the masses must be resourced to perform their mandates.
"At the end of the day, communication strategy must be impactful," he said.
“The briefings have been too Anglo-centric and it is only recently that they've started introducing other local languages. They need to do more,” he said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday.
In his view despite recent efforts by the government to translate some of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s national address and other briefings on the Covid-19 situation in Ghana into the various local languages, these attempts are belated.
He has proposed that the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) be incentivised to dedicate even more air time to communicate on Covid-19.
He said more community stations were needed to improve communication to the larger population resident in rural areas.
