President Nana Akufo-Addo says law enforcement agencies are determined to locate the originators of some fake videos, alleged to be excesses from police and military personnel implementing the lockdown directive aimed at containing the Covid-19 outbreak.
Describing the circulating of these videos as “sad and unfortunate,” Akufo-Addo said nobody stands to benefit from such conduct.
“It must end,” Akufo-Addo said in an address from the Jubilee House on the evening of Palm Sunday, adding he is perturbed by those sharing the videos.
He said most of such videos are old, of foreign origin and have nothing to do with the ongoing implementation of the imposition on restrictions in Accra and parts of the Ashanti region.
Speaking on the conduct of the security officials, the president said they have “discharged their mandate with considerable professionalism.”
He said in the few instances where some officials used excessive force, the Inspector-General of Police and the Chief of Defense Staff have taken steps to investigate the matter.
All the officers involved in these situations, he said, have been withdrawn from the operation.
Speaking on other issues, Akufo-Addo said Ghana is entering a “critical” phase in fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said health authorities are expecting the results of some 15,000 of 19,000 contacts of persons who have tested positive for the virus.
This, he said would determine the way forward in Ghana’s fight.
The case count for Ghana, meanwhile, remains 214, with five fatalities.
