A 41-year-old sailor has bee placed under quarantine at the Keta Municipal Hospital in the Volta Region, after he showed symptoms similar to the new coronavirus.
Five other fishermen who came into contact with the suspected case, have been told to self-quarantine.
The unidentified man was said to have been handed over to health authorities on Thursday, through the fishermen, by some Chinese on a fishing vessel.
A sample collected from him has been sent to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIR) for the Covid-19 test.
This has triggered panic in Keta and Anglo districts as residents thre say they have been living on the edge since the news broke.
However, Keta Municipal Chief Executive, Godwin Edudzi Effah, has allayed the fear of residents, saying the situation is under control.
He is urging calm among residents in the area.
“We are assuring residents to remain calm as the situation is under control and we are hoping that the results come out negative as the man in question was only having fever when he was brought in by the fishermen,” Mr Effah explained.
Ghana has so far recorded 205 Covid-19 cases and five deaths with some patients recovering.
