The Accra Golden Lions Club to make a donation to the Pediatric Oncology Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

The group also took advantage of their presence at the hospital to spend time with the children at the Unit. 

Since February marks the Pediatric Cancer Month of Lions Clubs across the world, the leadership humanitarian group selected KATH in Kumasi for this year's donation.

A number of items were identified as a need to have as the Children receive the cancer treatment.

Members of the club with support from Twellium Industries, Road Trip Ghana, Minerals Commission and Total Petroleum Ghana donated the following items nine bedside lockers, once medicine trolley, packs of diapers, 60 branded goodie bags with re-usable plastic plates, cups and cutlery sets and 30 big and small waste bins.

They also included 20 packs of Verna mineral water, 20 packs of Planet soft drinks, one Multi TV satellite decoder, 20 plastic chairs and a lovely cake.

Each year, more than 300,000 children are diagnosed with cancer and the donation is part of the Club's desire to improve childhood cancer survival among children and support their families while they experience the unimaginable social, economic, and emotional burdens of having a child with cancer.

The District Governor of District 418, Dr Kwaku Mensa-Bonsu and his team were given a tour of the unit after the donation. 

“Childhood cancer is a major issue globally and it forms part of the core areas Lions Clubs International. This activity is a form of highlighting the challenges and plights of children living with cancer and the call for government, NGOs, individuals and stakeholders to put in the needed support for the survival of these little ones.

“It is important that we support and make life a little more comfortable for these children and that's why Accra Golden Lions Club is here today at the Pediatric Cancer Unit of the KomfoAnokye Teaching Hospital,'' Dr Mensa-Bonsu said.

The Head of the Pediatric (childhood) Cancer Oncology Unit, said they are very grateful for the gesture and believe the support from groups like the Club will enable them to sustain efforts to treat the children.

President Accra Golden Lions Club, Jennifer Duodu-Mensah also said, children are the next generation of leaders and although they may be vulnerable they must be supported.

“Lions in general are passionate about supporting children with cancer and we seek to offer the needed support to help them survive and strive even as the battle this dreadful disease.

“As a mother and President, I decided to make this activity my legacy project for the 2019/2020 Lions year of service. Looking forward to coming back to give more support even after leaving office as president”.

The Lions Club International is a humanitarian service organization of 1.4 million members worldwide who raise money for worthy causes.

For decades, Lions have contributed to vision programs, diabetes, pediatric cancer, hunger relief, disaster relief, humanitarian causes and community needs.
