The Police Administration will not recruit new personnel this year because of lack of facilities to house them.
The police organise annual mass recruitment exercises through which the service adds hundreds of personnel.
The exercise has therefore become a huge draw for many Ghanaian youths each year.
But speaking to Joy News on Monday, Police Public Affairs Director DSP Kwesi Ofori said this year’s exercise has been suspended.
He said the administration is already find it difficult to accommodate the present staff and would therefore be unwise to add more to the worsened situation.
“We’ve suspended the recruitment drive and that will let the police administration concentrate on the development of housing projects and improve on existing housing facilities,” he hinted.
DSP Ofori disclosed that the Police Administration is, as a result, developing a comprehensive programme to improve on the human capacity of the existing personnel.
The news has however drawn criticisms from a section of the public who believe stalling the exercise would mean few personnel to handle crime in the country.
President John Evans Atta Mills pledged at his investiture to reduce crime drastically by adopting certain strategic measures.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Paul Tawiah Quaye has also made the promise that his vision is to give the service a world-class branding.
The suspension of the exercise, according to government’s critics, might make that vision a mere charade.
