Government abandons chase for mystery cash

Government is no longer interested in pursuing the mysterious millions of dollars said to have been stashed in a Swiss account by Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. A source close to government's Economic Management Team told Joy News on Friday, the alleged account is senseless and too good to be true. A scheduled trip to Switzerland to ascertain the authenticity of the account has subsequently been canceled. The source said nothing credible has been provided to warrant a continuous hunt for the money. He suspects the ‘messenger,’ Gregg Frazier, who has on countless occasions pressured governments, past and present, to pursue and claim the mysterious amount, has a personal motive. In an interview with Citi News, Gregg Frazier sounded not the least amused with comments attributed to some government officials which he said sought to undermine his credibility. He challenged the Mills administration to set up an investigative committee, akin to that of the Ghana@50 celebrations to pursue the matter. He said past governments have failed to retrieve the said amount, largely because they chose the “stupid way.” According to him, a total of $47 billion interest free amount is in one of seven accounts waiting to be withdrawn by the government of Ghana. He could not however tell the amounts stashed in the six other accounts largely to what he said are attributable to inconsistencies in the world financial system. In what is believed to be his first pronouncement on his motivations for pursuing the agenda, Mr. Frazier said he only needs Ghanaian passports for his children and a land to set up a hospital in Ghana. The Oman Ghana Fund was said to have been activated in 1959 by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah with the help of some Pan-Africanists with the aim of developing Ghana and other African countries.
