Apart from increasing his overall goal tally to five at an African Cup of Nations, Midfielder Mubarak Wakaso's strike on Thursday evening was a major AFCON landmark in both the history of Africa and Ghana.
That goal was the 1,500th scored in the history of the competition, just over eleven years after the 1000th goal was scored.
Nigeria legend Austin Okocha scored the 1000th goal of the competition at the 2004 edition against South Africa in Tunisia.
It was also Ghana’s 120th goal in the history of the tournament since making a first appearance at the 1963 edition which Ghana hosted and won.
Ghana is making its 20th Nations cup appearance out of 30, playing its 88th game against Equatorial Guinea yesterday. The record stands at 49 wins, 16 draws and 22 losses.
The Celtic midfielder, who is making his second appearance for Ghana in an AFCON was Ghana’s top scorer and also finished as joint Top scorer with four goals in the 2013 edition of AFCON hosted by South Africa.
Ghana has now scored 121 goals in African Nations Cup history and conceded 74 goals. Andre Ayew scored the 121st goal.
