AMA boss issues ultimatum to hawkers

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has issued a 14-day ultimatum to hawkers and traders who sell at unauthorized places in the capital to relocate or face ejection. In what appears to be the Assembly’s major policy alternative to decongest the capital city since the investiture of its new chief executive, Dr Alfred Nii Okoe Vanderpuije, the AMA said it is set to carry out the programme and will not look back. At a press conference in Accra on Monday, Dr Vanderpuije outlined a six-point order which he said the assembly would enforce to the letter. To this end, traders and hawkers in the streets are to relocate to the Pedestrian Shopping Mall at Odawna and other traditional markets established by the AMA before the 15th of June, 2009. According to the Assembly, traders who have deserted spaces allocated them at the markets risk having their premises re-allocated to others. The assembly has also issued instructions to owners of unauthorized structures along ceremonial roads to remove them before the deadline. Furthermore, it would be criminal for people to use lorry parks and pavements as sleeping places. The AMA will also continue it’s vehicle towing programme to ensure that vehicles are not abandoned on the roads to cause traffic congestion and endanger lives. It also vowed to clamp down on the disposal of plastic waste into drains and other unapproved places.
