This year’s National Swimming Championship ended at the Tesano Sports Club in Accra yesterday with major upsets in the seniors’ category.
The two-day event, which was organized by the Ghana Swimming Association, under the auspices of the National Sports Council (NSC) and sponsored by Multipro Private Limited, distributors of Indomie Instant Noodles, witnessed the discovery of potential contestants for Gold at the Olympic Games and other world swimming contests.
The highlight of this weekend’s championship was the 100 meters freestyle for seniors, where discovery of the tournament Eloi Adjavon, emerged winner, beating Ghana internationals like Raymond Atsu-Blewu, Illiasu Abraham, Adu Opanka, Cisse and Albert Opare-Larbi.
Adjavon, 17, who took part in both senior and junior events, swept various awards, winning the 50 meters freestyle in both categories in 27 seconds. The young swimmer was indeed a delight to watch, showing amazing skills, techniques and strength.
Another young swimmer who gave a very good account of himself, was Joachim Ofosuhene. The 16-year-old gave Adjavon a good run for his money, with the pair leaving behind, experienced senior swimmers in most of the events.
The story of the championship would be incomplete without mentioning the names of Justina Adarkwah, Chloe Donohue and siblings Ralph Quaye and Rudi Quaye.
In the under-6-years category, Chelsea Degraft Ackun and Paul Jackson excelled in the female and male divisions respectively.
Other swimmers who won honours were Eyiram Shabashie, Ainsley Payne, Ryan Degraft Ackun, Ahmed Hallal, Abeiku Jackson, Serwa Quarshie, Ewura Quarshie, Kow Asafua Jackson, Selinam Shabashie, and Wesley Goshen.

At the event, speakers such as Worlanyo Agrah, Acting Chief Executive of the NSC; George Billings Awuakye, Chief Sports Development Officer; and Erasmus Adorkor, deputy Chief Development Officer, urged the young swimmers to train hard in order represent Ghana well on the international stage.
The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), whose president, B.T. Baba, was present throughout the two-day event, assured the Ghana Swimming Association of technical support for its coaches.
This was in anticipation of an appeal by Ibrahim Issah, President of the Ghana Swimming Association. “The GOC has indeed taken the wind off my sail by the assurance. We at the swimming association will hold the GOC to their promise,” Mr Issah said.
Also present at the event were Alex K. Adjei, general secretary of the Ghana Swimming Association; Saka Acquaye, general secretary of the Ghana Handball and Basketball associations.
In an interview with DAILY GUIDE SPORTS after the presentation of certificates to winners, Mr Issah thanked the officiating officials including Jackson, the announcer.
