Police-military teams are on high alert as prospects of renewed clashes in Bawku grow more imminent following sporadic gunshots over the weekend.
One person died and several houses and shops burnt as a result of some violence since Friday night.
Five men were Sunday arrested in connection with the murder of 34 year old Sulemana Ibrahim who was shot in front of his house while praying.
One Razak Bugri who witnessed the shooting told Joy News the situation is likely to escalate.
“Each corner of Bawku there is firing. It is scary…tension is building up already and people are moving out of town,” he said.
The police have given the assurance adequate measures are in place to maintain peace and security in the area.
The outgoing Upper East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Alhaji Hamidu Mahama said the military-police contingent is tracking down the shooters.
He said the town centre of Bawku was quiet as of Sunday evening residents sought refuge in their homes.
Kussasis and Manprusis in Bawku have been embroiled in a protracted chieftaincy crisis.
Following President Mills’ visit to the Upper East Region and his meeting with leaders of the two factions, it was believed that some calm would be experienced.
But analysts were probably wrong as no sooner had the president left than the clashes began, as calculated to embarrass him.
