The National Union of Ghana Students Saturday night will be awarding students with outstanding achievements.
The purpose of the NUGS National Awards is to acknowledge, encourage, reward and most importantly promote positive achievement of students and the youth in general.
Former executive of the union, who have and still are contributing to national development in tremendous ways, will be recognised.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Acknowledge and highlight the achievement of Ghanaian students and organizations investing in the educational sector the youth.
The alumni aspect is to create a sense of pride in the alumni of the union. The others represent individuals contributing to the youth developmental agenda of the country.
The alumni subcategory shall go to alumni of NUGS who are making giant strides in the country or abroad.
It shall not be limited to any particular year group. However nominee (alumni) should have no questionable or defective record when a student leader in a recognized institution.
National officers shall present list of alumni to be considered for the awards. MC shall determine nominee in the OTHER subcategory.
The number of awards and the nominees to be awarded shall be left to the discretion of the management committee.
However, the number of awardees in all shall go beyond eight (8).
THE ORGANISATIONS CATEGORY
- Educate the general public with examples of youth achievement.
- Encourage and motivate students (youth) at all levels and irrespective of their field of study.
- Develop a sense of pride in being a Ghanaian student
- Serve as an incentive to inspire more talent and abilities.
- Build self-confidence through rewards of excellence.
- Provide role models and mentors for the youth.
- Develop and encourage leadership and life skills in the young Ghanaian.

- Most creative and innovative student
- Best student entrepreneur
- Best student advocate / activist
- Best campus group /club
- Best student thesis / project
- Best student writer / author
- Best student journalist
- Best male and female student leaders.
- Most versatile student
- Best sports personality (football, volleyball, tennis, athletics, hockey and basketball)
- International Student Award
- CATEGORY B : THE ALUMNI CATEGORY
- CATEGORY C : THE ORGANISATIONS CATEGORY
- CATEGORY D : THE INSTITUTIONS CATEGORY
- CATEGORY E: THE YOUTH MODEL ICON OF THE YEAR
- This award shall go to a student who has displayed innovativeness and creativity in a particular way.
- The purpose of this sub category award is to inspire and reward ingenuity among Ghanaian students.
- The creativity and innovativeness may be in the form of an invention or an upgrade of an already existing system in a unique way.
- Where others contributed significantly to the success of the product, the applicant or nominee should have contributed to not less than eighty percent of the entire thing.
- Only one award shall be given per year at the ceremony.
- For the purpose of clarity, an entrepreneur here is a business-minded person who is able to identify and make good use of opportunities; and where opportunities are rare is able to create one.
- This award is given to a student who successfully owns and run a business.
- The business should be registered under the laws of Ghana.
- Being able to combine the business with academics shall be a plus.
- This person must have started the business as a student.
- Where the business is in line with the students field of study it shall be a plus for the nominee.
- This award shall go to a student who publicly supports a worthy course.
- This person shall be someone who publicly fights for the rights and genuine interest of others.
- Must be one who has presented himself / herself as the voice of the voiceless and strength for the weak, vulnerable and oppressed.
- Activism and advocacy in the student course shall be given special consideration.
- Being able to successfully combine activism / advocacy with academic work shall be a plus.
- Shall go to a campus based club or organization that offers services to students
- This group should have been registered in accordance with the institutions regulation and laws
- Where group has other branches in other institutions it should have been register under the law of Ghana
- Impact of the group on the campus located shall be given critical attention.
- It shall not be a religious group/ club
- Number in terms of membership and branches shall duly considered.
- Shall go to a student or group of student who have together written a thesis or undertaken a worthwhile project
- The project /thesis should be directly beneficial to society
- The thesis/ project should not be more than a year old
- Thesis shall not be someone’s intellectual property. In the same vein project or invention should be genuine and new.
- Where it is discovered that project /thesis was plagiarized or reinvented or stolen award shall be withdrawn and a public notice made to that effect.
- It may be a group work in which case the group leader or representative shall receive the presentation.
- This award shall be given to a student who has displayed outstanding performance in the field writing
- The purpose of this award category is to encourage more young writers and recognize those already faring in the field of writing.
- The overall winner of this award must have published his/her work in a book or in any journal .
- Writing in magazines, newspaper or any recognizable journal shall also be considered.
- Writings may be on any field and topic of interest.
- Any publication presented should have been registered in accordance with the laws of publishing in Ghana.
- This award shall go to a student who is also journalist.
- The rationale in giving this award is to appreciate and encourage more students into journalism.
- Journalist here does not necessarily refer to a registered one but any student whose work defines her, him as journalist
- It shall not be based on any particular field of journalism.
- Work experience with any registered media shall be crucial to the granting of award.
- In determining winner for this award category, sample work shall be reviewed.
- This award shall be based on gender. That is, the male and female leadership award and shall go to a male and female student respectively.
- The two forms of the award shall be given to students who have outstanding records of achievements as leaders.
- Student leaders who receive this award should have records of having to have defied odds withstood pressure and inconveniences.
- Being able to effectively combine academic work and leadership challenges shall be an advantage.
- The recipients should be persons of charisma and character.
- Premised on the fact that it is better to know something about everything than to know everything about something, this award seeks to encourage the youth to invest into a variety of fields.
- Recipient must have demonstrated knowledge in a broad spectrum.
- This person must have demonstrated ability to combine and manage fields for instance a computer science student demonstrating competence and great feat in the art work, athletics and a good business man.
- This person must be performing creditably in all listed fields of endeavor.
- There shall be only one recipient per year under this category.
- This award shall go to sports personality who is a student in a recognized institution under NUGS.
- The purpose of this award category is to encourage more students and youth to take key interest in sports.
- The recipients of this award must still be actively involved in the sports discipline.
- The applicants must have progressive records in the sports field.
- Being able to combine sports with academics shall be a plus
- Membership of applicant in current institutions sports team or participation in a national sporting event shall be duly considered.
- The purpose of this award is primarily to enforce unity and cohesion between Ghanaian students and the international students. NUGS also seeks to encourage international student participation in local student activities.
- Students to be awarded must have distinguished themselves particularly in the area of good interpersonal relations with the Ghanaian students and other foreign students.
- Active involvement in campus activities and having a leadership position locally shall be a plus.
- There shall be two awards under this sub category given each year: one for a male and the other a female.
- Interested students shall apply from the various campuses to be considered.
- Awards in this category shall be presented to organizations / companies who have contributed or are contributing to the development of youth (students) and the promotions of education in the country.
- The purpose is to encourage more organization and stakeholders to contribute and invest meaningfully towards the youth and education.
- The number of awards recipients shall be determined by the MC.
- Notwithstanding, the total number shall not exceed nine(9) and shall include the following stakeholder divisions: Best student Travel Agency, Best student hostel ,Best financial institution, Best Transport service, Best media house and Best Publishing firm.
- Companies who have statutory mandate to contribute to education and the youth development shall not be considered.
- However if the organization is doing exceptionally well beyond the expected norm, it shall be considered for the awards.
- This award shall go to an institution recognized under NUG.
- The purpose of this award is to encourage cooperation and support from member institutions.
- Areas that shall receive critical attention are dues payment, achievements, attendance at NUGS programmes; and working relationship between the SRC and local NUGS of the institution.
- The award nominee shall be determined by the national officers.
- Under this category there shall be only one award given per year to a tertiary member institution.
- Previous recipients are still eligible for nominations and award(s).
- Also under this category shall be awards to the first three (3) outstanding institutions that topped in the WASSCE local (Ghana) ranking and the first three outstanding district in the GES district rankings for BECE candidates.
- This award shall go to a youth who can serve as an icon (mentor) to the other youth and has distinguished himself or herself from his/her colleagues and his making positive impact nationally.
- The purpose is to identify and present a youth personality that other youth can look at as beacon.
- The presentation of the award shall not be limited to any particular field of endeavor.
- There shall be three nominations by management committee (MC) in consultation with NEC.
- NEC shall present the three (3) nominees to the Board of Directors (BOD)
- Either CC or the general public shall vote for 50% toward the determination of the winner for the Award.
- The other 50% shall be determined by the Board of Directors (BOD)
- Nominees shall not be more than 35 years old.
- Educational background of nominees shall not be a bias or limitation.
- The winner shall mentor all student awardees of that year for at least one year and be made to give address or presentation on any topic of choice during the NUGS congress that year.
