A British fan, believed to be a Manchester United supporter, has been hospitalised and is receiving treatment for a knife-wound in his thigh, Italian authorities in Rome have confirmed.
He was attacked near his hotel by four suspects, but is believed to be making a recovery.
The news comes as a blow to the safety measures and assurances put in place in Rome. On the last three occasions when English supporters have visited Rome, there has been violence involving knives.
During Arsenal's recent visit to the Italian capital, one Gunners fan was stabbed in the knee after Ultras ransacked a bus.
Police are believed to still be investigating the attack.
Elsewhere, and in an unrelated crime, two British fans have been arrested for being drunk and disorderly.
