Next year’s National Population Census risk being deferred following bitter agitations by workers against the management.
The workers complain of widespread dissatisfaction following the freeze in staff promotion by the management.
“A lot of the technical staff have not been promoted for the past three years and it is also true that a lot of the graduates even though completed their courses two or three years ago have not been promoted,” Robert Kwamena Mensah, Chairman of the Public Service Workers Union told Joy News in an interview on Wednesday.
The workers have called for the removal of Dr. Bediako who they accuse of deliberately sabotaging the 2010 national census.
Mr. Mensah said the government statistician masterminded the transfer of key members of the 2000 census team away from Accra, an action he feared could jeopardise the census.
He said formal complaints made to the Trades Union Congress to address their concerns have not yielded any fruits as management appear adamant in resolving them.
Meanwhile the government statistician Dr. Grace Bediako has dismissed the allegations by the workers.
She defended the transfer of the workers, adding it will in no way jeopardise preparations towards the 2010 National Census.
