Workers of the PSC Shipyard, formerly the Tema Dry Dock Limited are up in arms over what they say is the company's mismanagement by the Malaysian owners.
The workers say the company has been run down completely with no injection of machinery and capital, 12 years after the Malaysians took over.
60 per cent shares of the Tema Dry Dock was in 1997 sold to the Malaysians for $3.5 million, at a time when the transport magnate Alhaji Asuma Banda offered to pay $10 million.
The agreement was for the new owners to provide equipment and improve conditions of the company.
But 12 years down the line, workers told Joy News’ Stephen Anti that the company is worse off.
They say the company still uses old equipment purchased by the country’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
What is worse, the workers say working and welfare conditions in the company have badly detriorated.
In an interview with Joy News, the Minister of Transport, Mike Hammah confirmed that the company has been run down by the Malaysians. “During my familiarisation tour about three weeks ago, I found out that they haven’t really made any substantial investment since they took management of the place after it was privatised in 1997.”
He said “government will take a second look at it and at the appropriate time government will make our decision known to them.”
