Hospital turns away woman in labour

A man in Accra is complaining of how nurses at the Kaneshie Polyclinic turned his pregnant wife away after she reported to the clinic in labour. Louis Asimanu claims that staff of the hospital told his wife that she was not due for labour when she reported at the clinic last Friday with severe contractions. But after admitting her shortly, the nurses, he said, asked his wife to go home since she was not due to have her baby until after two or three days. The nurses were wrong; soon after arriving at home the woman gave birth unaided. Distraught Asimanu told Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoe that seeing his wife in his room with her first born on the floor enveloped by the placenta, blood and amniotic fluid was very depressing. He said his labouring wife was so exhausted she could not call anyone to come to her aid at a time he was at work. According to him, he instinctively rushed home and found her in a very precarious situation suffering the indiscretion of the nurses at the Kaneshie Polyclinic. “I shouted and then people came and helped me carry the baby, the umbilical cord in the blood. It pains me a lot,” he regretted. Currently the mother and baby are receiving treatment at the Mamprobi Polyclinic and are said to be recuperating. Meanwhile the authorities at the Kaneshie Polyclinic say they are investigating the matter. Story by Malik Abass Daabu/Myjoyonline.com
