Edgar Takyi Donkor, a sociologist at the University of Cape Coast, says the nation has to re-look at its educational system as part of measures to fight the raging internet fraud associated with the youth. He said since most of the youth engaged in internet fraud popularly referred to as “sakawa” are school dropouts, the educational system could help by finding ways to give chance to the young ones to make it in life. Speaking to Joy News’ Evans Mensah on Tuesday, Edgar Donkor also suggested the need to overhaul the whole society to ensure that every segment of the society works, whereby, irrespective of the course one pursues, he or she is respected in the society. The sociologist was commenting on the move by some young government officials to use their life experiences to advice young men and women that fraud is not the way to riches. Mr Donkor, though commended the action, he said: “It is not straight forward that the fact that they are coming out with their right stories that it is possible by going through the normal way may necessary change people who are bent on making it.” He bemoaned what he described as "illegitimate conditions" available to the youth in the country. He noted that most of these youth engaged in fraudulent activities do not have the kind of opportunities that would make them excel as their counterparts elsewhere. He however said since there are those in the society who are willing to pursue the normal course to riches, the society would have to have a clear-cut way for such people in terms of the kind of incentives and motivation the society has for them. “This is the kind of complex issue as a society we need to sit down and make objective opportunities for the young ones, other than that they will find their own way of making it the way they want to make it.” Story by Isaac Essel/Myjoyonline.com
